I visited: Amy’s Ice Cream in the South Congress neighborhood of Austin, Texas. The shop — which offers a few outdoor picnic tables only — has a sizable list of ice creams and toppings to choose from. There was a moderate-to-long line each time we passed, which actually works out because it takes quite a minute to decide what to order.
I tried: The Mexican vanilla ice cream in a cup (tiny size) topped with crushed gingersnap cookies and fresh strawberries.
Why it stood out: I do have to give myself a little credit for coming up with this combination! But Amy’s fresh ingredients really made it all come together. The ice cream had a hint of spice, which the gingersnaps took to the next level. And the real accomplishment here? The fresh strawberries — that’s right, not strawberry gel stuff — that offered a lovely sweet and tart finish. This tiny size was just enough.
It cost: $4.46
