I visited: Mercer’s Dairy in Boonville, N.Y., a shop that sells more than 30 flavors of ice cream, including its somewhat famous variety of wine ice cream. A hand-written sign above the wine ice cream section of the display case read “Must be 21 to enjoy!” Flavors of the “adults only” ice cream include cherry merlot, sparkling strawberry, chocolate cabernet, red raspberry chardonnay, riesling, port, and my favorite …
I tried: one scoop of peach white Zinfandel ice cream in a cone.
Why it stood out: Joel and I spotted an ad for the the wine ice cream while we were visiting with his grandma in the Adirondacks over the weekend. We’d never heard of such a thing, so we thought, what the heck, why not drive out to Boonville and try it. I don’t know what I expected wine ice cream to be like … maybe gelato or sorbet, something a little more grapey? But the Mercer’s rendition was exactly what it claimed to be. The peach white Zinfandel ice cream had the bright aroma of white wine, but the flavor was buttery and rich, with dabs of fresh frozen peaches. Mercer’s claims that each pint of ice cream contains a glass of wine, but I’m pretty sure the only buzz I got from eating my cone was that of the excitement of trying something new. Delicious, no less!
It cost: $2.50
