For one year, we lived together as we attended Kent State University for journalism. We both graduated and moved on, but we wanted a way to keep in touch. While we lived together, we enjoyed cooking, throwing dinner parties and visiting local foodie attractions, such as the Haymaker Farmers’ Market, Beckwith Orchards and the Kent Natural Food CO-OP — so the natural way to stay in contact is food! That’s where this blog came in.
We hope you enjoy our slew of recipes, along with restaurant reviews, tips, gardening adventures and the occasional postcard or letter. Drop us a line anytime at dkscooks@gmail.com.
Oh … and if you’re wondering what DKS means, it’s short for the Daily Kent Stater, the newspaper we both worked for at Kent State and the reason we met.
Caitlin has copy-edited and contributed to the food sections of the Columbus Dispatch and The Roanoke Times. Now she lives in Providence, R.I., and works as an executive assistant and communications coordinator for the Providence College School of Business. Most weeknights and weekends, you can find her in the kitchen with all four burners going or at her community garden plot, flipping compost and waiting (impatiently) for harvest time.
Sarah lives in Chicago and works as an editor at the ABIS Group. She probably spends the vast majority of her income working her way through the city’s farmer’s markets, restaurants and grocers. Even though she’s fallen in love with Chicago’s food scene, she still holds Pittsburgh — her hometown — in high regard thanks to years of roaming the Strip District and gorging on Primati’s sandwiches. Deep dish pizza and Vienna beef dogs are no match for Sarah’s Steel City stomach.
Cool, Caitlin — “Meatless Dishes in Twenty Minutes” — I’m the one who gave your grandma that cookbook (gave one to your mom, too, I’m pretty sure). It’s a favorite book! But over the years we have always somehow found a way to turn any recipe into a meatful dish in about 45 minutes…
Really liked this blog. I’m in my 50’s and have been cooking, ok at best, for over 20 years. I’m only now really learning anything, and I’ve got a handful of dishes down.
I’m looking forward to some of these recipes. Great photos too!

Love your blog – plan to try a few things this weekend. We have one vegan, one vegetarian (me) and 3 meat eaters in our family….pleasing everyone is tough!
