Pomegranate orange peel tea with gingered honey

The timing of this month’s guide couldn’t be more perfect. I’ve been battling a cold since Christmas Day, and although the worst of it is over, I can tell you for a fact that this tea soothes an uneasy stomach and encourages stuffy nasal cavities to loosen up. Ginger and honey are classic remedies for upset stomach and sore throats, respectively, and the benefits of orange and pomegranate peels were new news to me. Both are high in vitamin C and calcium. Orange peel tea has been used to treat heartburn and indigestion, and pomegranate peel tea has been used to soothe sore throats. One thing to keep in mind when purchasing your fruit for this tea: Organic is absolutely best, as peels touched by chemicals tend to absorb those chemicals.

Orange-scented granola

This granola offers just a hint of orange flavor and scent, but it’s just enough. I also add a few orange slices to my bowl for breakfast. It’s winter — go ahead and throw in some extra vitamin C anywhere you possibly can.

Pasta with brown butter beets and orange-sage ricotta

Don’t skimp on the seasoned ricotta! The orange zest and sage really add a fresh bite to the earthy pasta. The walnuts are a must as well, for the crunch factor. This dish is a playful pink for Valentine’s Day — but it also offers some very deep, wonderful flavors and velvety texture. Romance on a plate!

Orange-cornmeal spiral cookies

I had been thinking of making polenta cookies, but got the urge to bake before I bought any polenta. The next best thing? Cornmeal. I love the smell (citrus/floral), texture (slightly soft yet gritty) and taste (awesome) of these cookies. They’re the perfect little companions to tea. Or wine.

The original recipe called for fennel at the bottom of the pan, but fennel isn’t always my favorite. I loved the fish with the onions (which also picked up the glaze beautifully) and would even suggest adding broccoli as well.

Winter cobb salad with a creamy citrus dressing

I love the creaminess of cobb salad dressings, and the citrus flavors in this version give it a wintery boost — in addition to the Christmas-style red and green of the pomegranate and Brussels. There are a lot of flavors and textures to this dish, but certainly not too many that the eater gets lost.
